The account of Martha and Mary is unique to Luke’s gospel. While Jesus and his disciples continue on their way, they depend on the hospitality of these two characters for food and lodging. Martha was plagued with anxiety and resentment, while Mary, who received the travelling prophet, was listening and learning from him. Jesus’ teaching of today’s Gospel is at odds with that of last Sunday’s. There Jesus praised the Samaritan who had been busy and hospitable; today he seems to offer a woman who does not move a finger to help her sister as a model. Martha, the oldest, puts herself to work immediately. Her feminine sensibility suggests that a glass of good wine and a plate of tasty meat, served with kindness, show more affection than any talk for a person. Mary, the youngest, instead of working in the kitchen, prefers to stay seated to listen to Jesus. It is at this point that between the two sisters a quarrel erupts that will end up involving their quest and the guest. Jesus asks Martha, “Why are you so burdened with much serving, when there is need of only one thing?” How are we balancing the needs of our faith with our emotional, physical and social needs? Jesus makes it clear that the fruit of Martha’s labours are temporary but that of Mary’s time spent with Him will last forever, “It will not be taken from her.” Today, our dinner guests come to our homes wishing to strengthen our friendship and fellowship through conversations, than to have mere entertainment or sumptuous meal.
லூக்கா நற்செய்தியில் காணும் மார்த்தா மரியாவின் நிகழ்வு தனித்துவம் பெற்றது. இயேசுவும் அவருடைய சீடர்களும் தங்கள் பயணத்தைத் தொடர்கையில், அவர்கள் உணவு மற்றும் உறைவிடத்திற்கு இவ்விரண்டு நபர்களின் விருந்தோம்பலைச் சார்ந்திருந்தார்கள். மார்த்தா விருந்தினர் வரவில் பல காரியங்களைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்பட்டு மனக்கசப்புக்கு ஆளானார்; அதே வேளையில் மரியாளோ இறைவாக்கினராக அவரை ஏற்று அவரிடம் பல காரியங்களைக் கேட்டு கற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்தார். இன்றைய நற்செய்தியில் இயேசுவின் படிப்பினை கடந்த ஞாயிறு போதனைக்கு முரண்பட்டதாய் அமைந்துள்ளது. அங்கே பல காரியங்களில் விரும்தோம்பல் செய்த சமாரியனை இயேசு புகழ்ந்தார். இன்று தனது சகோதரிக்கு ஒரு விரலை கூட அசைத்து உதவி செய்யாத பெண்ணை முன் உதாரணமாக காட்டுகிறார். மூத்தவளான மார்த்தா பெண்களுக்கே உரிய விருந்தோம்பல் உணர்வால் உந்தப்பட்டு, உடனடியாக வேலை செய்ய தன்னை ஈடுபடுத்துகிறாள். அவள் நல்ல திராட்சை இரசமும் மற்றும் சுவையான இறைச்சியும் பரிமாறுவது எவ்வித பேச்சையும் விட சிறந்தது என்று கருதுகின்றாள். இளையவள் மரியா, சமையலறையில் வேலை செய்வதற்குப் பதிலாக, இயேசுவுடன் அமர்ந்து அவர் சொல்வதைக் செவிசாய்க்க விரும்புகிறாள். இந்த கட்டத்தில்தான் இரு சகோதரிகளுக்கிடையில் சண்டை வெடிக்கிறது. இச்சூழல் அவர்களுடைய உள்ளார்ந்த தேடலையும் விருந்தினரையும் மையப்படுத்துகிறது. மார்த்தாவிடம் இயேசு கேட்டது “பலவற்றைப் பற்றி ஏன் கவலைப் படுகிறாய், தேவையானது ஒன்றே.” நம்முடைய நம்பிக்கையின் தேவைகளை நம்முடைய உணர்ச்சி, உடல் மற்றும் சமூகத் தேவைகளுடன் எவ்வாறு சமன் செய்கிறோம்? மார்த்தாவின் உழைப்பின் பலன் தற்காலிகமானது என்பதை இயேசு தெளிவுபடுத்துகிறார். ஆனால் மரியா அவருடன் செலவழித்த நேரம் என்றென்றும் நிலைத்து நிற்கும் “அது அவளிடமிருந்து எடுக்கப்படாது” என்கிறார். இன்றும், நம்முடைய இல்லங்களுக்கு வரும் விருந்தினர்கள் நம் நட்பையும் ஒற்றுமையையும் உறுதியூட்ட விரும்பி வருகிறார்களே அன்றி, பொழுதுபோக்கவோ அல்லது சுவையான உணவைப் பெறவோ அல்ல.
