19th Sunday in Ordinary Time – 11th August 2019 — Gospel: Lk 12,32-48
Rewards for responsible leadership
In the light of the uncertainty of the eschaton time, Jesus presents the impending judgement that calls for disciples ‘preparedness and watchfulness’ (12,35) of the Lord’s return at the journey’s end. The parabolic language and the figures of the master and slave emphasize the responsibility on those who have been given the roles of leadership and special service in the community. Being “properly dressed” alludes to the state of readiness required for the Israelites during the first Passover in Egypt (Ex 12,11). The lit lamp indicates “watchfulness”. Jesus then explores the eschatological content from three perspectives: 1) the watchful servants await the return of an absent master (12,36-38). The watchful servants are twice blessed: for keeping watch and for watching late into the night. The roles are reversed, that master here becomes servant and his action anticipates Jesus’ self-description of the Last Supper. 2) The watchful master (12,39-40). The image of the thief in the night brings out the context of uncertainty of the timing of the Parousia. Here the householder is compared not to Jesus, but to the actions of his audience who are ever prepared (12,40). 3) The duties of the manager-slave in charge of the other slaves in the absence of the master (12,41-46). Jesus points to the responsibilities of the “faithful, wise” manager-slave toward fellow slaves. The distribution of food is singled out as a responsibility of the one in charge of (Acts 6,1). The master blesses and rewards with additional responsibility the wise and faithful servant, but punishes the disobedient steward. The Lord’s return is certain even though the “day” and “hour” remain unknown and the punishment for the failed leadership is inevitable and severe. However, the leaders have greater responsibility for their actions: “For the lowliest may be pardoned in mercy, but the mighty will be mightily tested” (Wis 6,6).
