19th Week in Ord. Time, Friday – 16th August 2019 — Gospel: Mt 19,3-12+
No divorce
As Jesus moves southward, from Galilee to Judea, his confrontation with the religious leaders intensifies. The first issue between Jesus and the Jewish leaders is divorce. Jesus refused to take side on this legal dispute; for he rejected the practices of divorce. Jesus has already included his teachings on the permanency of marriage in the sermon on the mount (5,31-32). He reaffirms here that God’s purpose to create man and woman was to live together and there is no place for divorce in His will. Jesus pronouncement, “what God has joined together, let no one separate” (Gen 1,27; 2,24), expresses God’s original intent for marriage. The teaching of Moses that allowed a man to divorce his wife is a concession to human sinfulness, not God’s plan and desire for marriage. Jesus’ teaching expresses three things: firstly, the first decisive statement against polygamy in Jewish tradition. Secondly, the husband is made responsible, i.e., by divorcing his wife and marrying another, he commits adultery. Thirdly, women are protected from their husbands’ power to divorce at all. Therefore the gospel is not about divorce, but about the unity of the family and sacredness of the matrimony. When a person sees marriage as a social practice or a social expectation to be fulfilled, then marriage loses its essence and direction. Marriage in the first place is a vocation, a call by God. It calls for a dedicated life and so the marriage partners become co-creators of human life.
இயேசு கலிலேயாவிலிருந்து யூதேயாவுக்கு தெற்கு நோக்கி செல்லும்போது யூத தலைவர்களுடனான மோதல் தீவிரமடைகிறது. இயேசுவிற்கும் யூதத் தலைவர்களுக்கும் இடையே ஏற்படும் முதல் பிரச்சனை விவாகரத்து பற்றியது. இந்த சட்ட மோதலில் ஈடுபட இயேசு மறுத்துவிட்டார்; ஏனெனில் அவர் விவாகரத்து நடைமுறைகளை நிராகரித்தார். ஏற்கனவே திருமணத்தின் நிரந்தரத்தன்மை குறித்த தமது போதனைகளை மலைப் பிரசங்கத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார் (5,31-32). இங்கு ஆணையும் பெண்ணையும் கடவுள் உருவாக்குவதன் நோக்கமே ஒன்றாய் வாழவே என்றும், அவருடைய விருப்பத்தில் விவாகரத்து செய்வதற்கு இடமே இல்லை என்றும் இயேசு மீண்டும் உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறார். “கடவுள் இணைத்ததை மனிதர் பிரித்தலாகாது” (தொநூ 1, 27; 2,24) என்ற இயேசுவின் அறிவிப்பு திருமணத்திற்கான கடவுளின் உண்மை நோக்கத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது. ஒருவன் தன் மனைவியை விவாகரத்து செய்ய அனுமதித்த மோசேயின் போதனை மனித பாவத்திற்கு சலுகையாகும், திருமணத்திற்கான விருப்பமாகும், இது கடவுளின் திட்டமல்ல என்கிறார். இயேசுவின் போதனையில் மூன்று கருத்துக்கள் வெளிப்படுகிறது: முதலாவதாக, இது யூத மரபில் பலதார திருமணத்திற்கு எதிரான முதல் தீர்க்கமான அறிக்கையாகும். இரண்டாவது, கணவர் முழுப்பொறுப்பை ஏற்கிறார். அதாவது மனைவியை விவாகரத்து செய்து மற்றொருவரை திருமணம் செய்வதன் மூலம் அவர் விபச்சாரம் செய்கிறார். மூன்றாவதாக, விவாகரத்து செய்யும் பெண்கள் தங்கள் கணவரால் பாதுகாக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். எனவே இன்றைய நற்செய்தி விவாகரத்து பற்றியது அல்ல; மாறாக, குடும்ப ஒற்றுமை மற்றும் திருமணத்தின் புனிதத்தன்மை பற்றியது. ஒரு நபர் திருமணத்தை சமூக அடையாளமாக அல்லது ஒரு எதிர்பார்ப்பாக நடத்தும்;போது, திருமணம் அதன் சாரத்தையும் நோக்கத்தையும் இழக்கிறது. முதலில் திருமணம் என்பது கடவுளின் அழைப்பாகும். இது முழுமையான அர்ப்பணிப்புக்கு இட்டுச் செல்கிறது. இவ்வாறு திருமண பந்தத்தில் இணைபவர்கள் மனித வாழ்வின் இணை படைப்பாளர்களாக மாறுகிறார்கள்.
