Bartholomew, Saturday – 24th August 2019 — Gospel: Jn 1,45-51
Profound understanding
Jesus sees in his disciples not only who they are now, but the persons who they will become. In this manner, Jesus looks at Nathanael into his heart. He upholds him as a person without “duplicity”, a forthright man who didn’t care about others opinions. He was also able to see Nathanael’s future, one who would see the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy. Like Andrew, Peter and Philip, Nathanael is also invited to “come and see” Jesus and have an intimate experience with him. On the surface Jesus is the “son of Joseph from Nazareth” (1,45). After his encounter with Jesus, he was able to recognize his true identity not just as king but as Saviour and Lord as well. Recognizing the identity of Jesus leads him to understand the glory of God manifest in Jesus. In this context, Nathanael moves from skepticism to bold Christological confession. What marks him as true disciple is that he removes his doubts and disbeliefs after his profound personal experience with Jesus. His declaration places him in the company of early disciples who share in Jesus’ glory, of “heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending” (1,51).
இயேசு தம்முடைய சீடர்களின் இன்றைய நிலையை மட்டுமல்ல, மாறாக அவர்களின் எதிர்கால நிலையையும் காண்கிறார். இதே நிலையில், நத்தனியேலின் உள்ளத்தை ஊடுருவிப் பார்க்கிறார் இயேசு. அவர் “கபடற்றவர்”, அதாவது, மற்றவர்களின் கருத்துக்களைப் பற்றி கவலைப்படாத ஒரு நேர்மையாளர் என்று அவரைப் பாராட்டுகிறார். மேலும், மெசியாவின் இறைவாக்கு நிறைவேறுதலை காணக்கூடிய ஒருவராக நத்தனியேலின் எதிர்காலத்தையும் இயேசுவால் காண முடிந்தது. அந்திரேயா, பேதுரு மற்றும் பிலிப்பு போலவே, நத்தனியேலும் இயேசுவுடன் ஓர் நெருங்கிய அனுபவத்தை பெற்றுக் கொள்ள “வந்து பாரும்” என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். மேலோட்டமாக, இயேசுவை கண்ட போது “நாசரேத்திலிருந்து வந்த யோசேப்பின் மகன்” என்று அறிந்து கொண்ட நத்தனியேல், இயேசுவுடன் மேற்கொண்ட உரையாடலுக்குப் பிறகு அவரை அரசராக மட்டுமல்ல, மீட்பராகவும் ஆண்டவராகவும் அறிக்கையிட்டு அவரின் உண்மை தனித்துவத்தை அடையாளம் கண்டு கொண்டார். இயேசுவின் தனித்துவத்தை உணர்ந்து கொள்ளும் போது, இயேசுவில் வெளிப்படும் கடவுளின் மாட்சியைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளவும் வழிவகுக்கிறது. இந்த சூழலில், நத்தனியேல் சந்தேகக் கண்ணோட்டத்திலிருந்து துணிச்சலான கிறிஸ்துவின் அறிக்கைக்கு இடம் பெயர்கிறார். இயேசுவுடனான தனிப்பட்ட ஆழ்ந்த அனுபவத்திற்குப் பிறகு அவர் தனது சந்தேகங்களையும் அவநம்பிக்கைகளையும் நீக்கி இயேசுவின் உண்மையான சீடராக மாறினார். அவருடைய கிறிஸ்துவ அறிக்கையினால், “வானம் திறந்து கடவுளின் தூதர்கள் ஏறி இறங்கும்” மகிமையைக் காணும் தொடக்ககால சீடர்களுடன் இவரும் இணைத்துக் கொள்ளும் வாய்ப்பைப் பெறுகிறார்.
