21st Ordinary Sunday – 25th August 2019 — Gospel: Lk 13,22-30
Strive in Jesus’ way
In response to a question about the number of those who will be saved, Jesus offers the image of the narrow door. This is the door that leads into the kingdom of God where the messianic banquet is served with Patriarchs. Alternating between messages of warning and hope, Jesus continually asserts that the time is short and that people must respond to God’s offer of the kingdom before it is too late. He teaches that one’s Jewish heritage and ethnic identity are not enough to be numbered among those who will dine in God’s kingdom. He urges his listeners to strive all the harder. The image is one of struggling to enter rather than strolling in. The two ways are: the narrow and broad, the way of life and the way of death. To the way of life belongs the love of God and neighbour, to bless those who curse you, to keep oneself far from the lusts of the flesh, to forgive those who have offended you, to be sincere, and being poor in spirit. To the way of death belongs on the contrary, violence, hypocrisy, injustice, dishonesty, oppression of the poor, and deceit. The narrow way is the way of commandment of love, and the broad way is the way of selfishness and self-gratification. Only a genuine relationship with Jesus, acceptance of his word and passing through suffering and trails, leads one through the narrow door to participate in an eternal life and an eschatological banquet.
மீட்கப்படுபவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை குறித்த கேள்விக்கு பதிலளிக்கும் விதமாக இயேசு இடுக்கமான வாயிலின் உருவகம் கொண்டு விளக்கமளிக்கிறார். இறையாட்சிக்கு செல்லும் நுழைவாயில் இதுதான், இங்கு மீட்பின் விருந்து குலமுதியவர்களுடன் பரிமாறப்படுகிறது. எச்சரிக்கை மற்றும் நம்பிக்கை செய்திகளுக்கு மத்தியில், கடவுள் வழங்கும் இறையாட்சிக்குள் நுழைய, நேரம் குறைவாக இருப்பதால், தாமதமாகிவிடும் முன்பே மக்கள் தகுந்த பதில்மொழி அளிக்க வேண்டும் என்று இயேசு தொடர்ந்து வலியுறுத்துகிறார். இறையாட்சியில் உணவருந்துவோரின் எண்ணிக்கையில் ஒருவரின் யூத பாரம்பரியமும் இன அடையாளமும் தகுதியல்ல என்று அவர் கற்பிக்கிறார். அவருடைய போதனையைக் கேட்போரை கடினமாக உழைக்க கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறார். எளிதாக நுழைவதற்கு பதில் கடினப்பட்டு நுழைய வேண்டும் என்ற உருவகத்தை முன் வைக்கிறார். இரண்டு வழிகள் உண்டு: குறுகிய மற்றும் பரந்த வழிகள்; இவை வாழ்வையும் இறப்பையும் காட்டும் வழிகள். கடவுள் மற்றும் அடுத்திருப்பவரின் அன்போடு வாழ்வுக்கான வழி இணைந்துள்ளது: சபிப்போரை ஆசீர்வதிப்பதும், உடலின்ப இச்சைகளிலிருந்து விலகி இருப்பதும், மனதில் காயப்படுத்தியவர்களை மன்னிப்பதும், நேர்மையாக இருப்பதும், மற்றும் எளிய மனத்தோராய் வாழ்வதும் ஆகும். மாறாக, இறப்பிற்கான வழியோ வன்முறை, போலித்தனம், அநீதி, நேர்மையின்மை, ஏழைகளை ஒடுக்குதல், மற்றும் ஏமாற்றுதல் இவற்றுள் அடங்கியுள்ளது. குறுகிய வழி அன்புக் கட்டளையை சார்ந்த வழி; பரந்த வழியோ சுயநலம் மற்றும் சுய திருப்திக்கான வழியாகும். இயேசுவுடன் கொள்ளும் ஆழமான உறவு அவருடைய வார்த்தையை ஏற்றுக் கொள்வதும், துன்பங்கள் மற்றும் சோதனைகளை கடந்து செல்வதும் ஆகும். இவ்வாறு ஒருவர் குறுகிய வாயில் வழியே நிலைவாழ்விலும் நிறைவுகால விருந்திலும் பங்கேற்க வழிவகுக்கிறது.
