Jesus’ Prophetical Assertion
In choosing the text from the Prophet Isaiah 61,1-2, into which Luke has inserted the verse of Is 58,6, presents the ‘mission’ statement of Jesus’ ministry. By referring to this manifesto and its fulfillment in him, Jesus presents himself as a prophet. In further references, Luke sarcastically mentions Elijah and Elisha to stress the prophetic aspect of Jesus. As the prophets were not always accepted by his people, Jesus too, finds himself rejected by his own folk in his hometown. Thus, this whole narrative foreshadows the rest of Jesus’ ministry and his ultimate rejection by the Jewish nation. In the midst of his struggle, it was the Spirit of the Father that led Jesus to preach, teach, proclaim and heal. The power of the Spirit attracts, creates awe and wonder, invites and initiates the process of excitement in people and ends up in conversion. Luke mentions two reactions to Jesus’ mission statement: the first reaction was one of admiration, but apparently it was a passing one. The second reaction was one of rejection and hostility leading to Jesus’ fatal end.
