11.09.2019 — Blessedness of being poor

23rd Week in Ord. Time, Wednesday – 11th September 2019 — Gospel: Lk 6,20-26

Blessedness of being Poor

In today’s gospel, the woes (6,24-26) form the natural correlative to the beatitudes (6,20-23). The woes together with beatitudes make a mockery of the world’s values. They exalt what the world despises and reject what the world admires. They pronounce a surprising verdict on qualities and states which men have universally regarded as desirable. The key distinction here is between the ‘poor’ and the ‘rich’. The other expressions function as illustrations. The ‘poor’ are hungry, they weep, and they are hated, excluded, reviled and defamed. By contrast, the ‘rich’ have their fill now, laugh now, and are spoken well of now. Their consolation is limited to the present. In future they will be hungry, mourn and weep. The key to understand the ‘poor’ is found in Jesus’ first use of it in the synagogue. He presents himself as anointed by the Spirit ‘to bring good news to the poor’ (Lk 4,18). Characters like Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, The Shepherds, Simeon and many others who were healed physically by Jesus, were really poor. They experienced blessedness through the intervention of God and Jesus. These poor people who received the good news of the kingdom recognize their total dependence on God, cry to him in their distress, and are committed to obey God’s will.
