Love through choice
The greatness of Jesus consists in giving a new paradigm in the “Love” command of Jews, so that they would get rid of the narrow mindedness of their culture. To love one’s fellow Israelite and to some extent the foreigners are a fundamental demand of the law (Lev 19,18; Jas 2,8). Jesus goes beyond this traditional injunction, and emphasizes four things, namely to love our enemies, to do good to those who hate us, to bless those who curse us and to pray for those who abuse us. The idea of loving one’s enemies is rarely found in the Old Testament (Prov 25,21). However, Jesus invites us to love profoundly and forgive irrespective of people and nations, beyond any division. The Greek word agape mentioned here is not spontaneous feeling that we associate with a spouse or family (stergein-Gk); it is not passionate desire (eros – Gk); nor is it the affection experienced between friends (philia-Gk). It is rather a love of choice. This Love must be marked by the same kindness and mercy which God has shown to us personally.
யூதர்களின் “அன்புக்” கட்டளையில் புதிய பரிமாணத்தை வழங்குவதில் இயேசுவின் மகத்துவம் அடங்கியுள்ளது. இதனால் அவர்கள் கலாச்சாரத்தின் குறுகிய மனப்பான்மையிலிருந்து விடுபடுவார்கள். ஒருவர் தம் சக இஸ்ரயேலரையும் மற்றும் அந்நியரையும் நேசிக்க வேண்டியது சட்டத்தின் அடிப்படைக் கோரிக்கையாகும் (லேவி 19,18; யாக் 2,8). இந்த பாராம்பரிய கட்டளைகளுக்கு அப்பால் இயேசு நான்கு விடயங்களை வலியுறுத்துகிறார்: பகைவருக்கு அன்பையும், வெறுப்பவர்களுக்கு நன்மையும், சபிப்பவருக்கு ஆசியும், இகழ்வோருக்கு செபத்தினையும். பகைவரை நேசிக்கும் சிந்தனை பழைய ஏற்பாட்டில் அரிதாகவே காணப்படுகிறது (நீதி 25,21). இருப்பினும் ஆழந்த அன்பு கொண்டு மக்களையும் நாடுகளையும் பிரிவினைகளையும் தாண்டி மன்னிக்க இயேசு நம்மை அழைக்கிறார். இங்கே அன்பைக் குறிக்கும் கிரேக்கச் சொல் agape ஆகும். இது வாழ்க்கை துணைவர் மற்றும் குடும்பத்துடன் தொடர்புபடுத்தும் இயற்கையான பாசமும் அல்ல (stergein-Gk); இது உணர்ச்சிவசப்படும் காமமும் அல்ல (eros-Gk); நண்பர்களுடன் அனுபவிக்கும் சிநேகமும் அல்ல (philia-Gk). இது விரும்பி செய்யப்படும் அன்பு. கடவுள் நமக்கு தனிப்பட்ட முறையில் காட்டிய அதே அக்கறையாலும் இரக்கத்தாலும் இந்த அன்பை நாம் எண்பிக்க வேண்டும்.
