26th Week in Ord. Time, Wednesday – 2nd October 2019 — Gospel: Lk 9,57-62
Sacrificial Commitment
The first character in this scene is obviously an enthusiastic scribe (Mt 8,18) who desires to follow Jesus. Jesus insists that to follow him is to follow the ‘Son of Man’. If he wants to follow Jesus he must be prepared to identify, as Jesus does, with the poor in spirit who cry to the Lord in their distress. He must be ready to share in Jesus’ mission which is to bring about God’s redemption. The term ‘foxes’ may refer to Herod and his supporters; while the ‘birds of the air’ may refer to the Roman occupying forces. These are the groups that exercise power in their land. If the scribe is seeking power he could better join them. But to follow the Son of Man, who demonstrates the judgement of God, is to associate like him with the oppressed and powerless. Jesus demands radical commitment from his disciples, which involves more self-sacrifice.
ஆர்வமாய் இயேசுவைப் பின்பற்ற விரும்பும் மறைநூல் அறிஞரே இப்பகுதியின் முதல் கதாபாத்திரம். இயேசு தன்னைப் பின்பற்றுவது என்பது “மானிட மகனை” பின்பற்றுவது என்று வலியுறுத்துகின்றார். மறைநூல் அறிஞர் அவரைப் பின்தொடர விரும்பினால், இயேசுவைப் போன்று, கடவுளிடம் துன்பத்தில் கூக்குரலிடும் ஏழைகளுடன் தன்னை ஐக்கியப்படுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். கடவுளின் மீட்பைக் கொணரும் இயேசுவின் பணியில் பங்கு கொள்ள தயராக இருக்கவும் வேண்டும். “நரிகள்” என்பது ஏரோது மற்றும் அவரது ஆதரவாளர்களைக் குறிக்கலாம். “வானத்துப் பறவைகள்” என்பது உரோமானிய ஆதிக்க சக்தியைக் குறிக்கலாம். இவ்விரு குழுக்களும் இந்த நாட்டில் அதீத அதிகாரம் செலுத்துகின்றன. மறைநூல் அறிஞர் இந்த அதிகாரத்தை நாடுகிறார் என்றால், இக்குழுக்களுடன் சேர்ந்து கொள்ளலாம். மாறாக, கடவுளின் இறுதித் தீர்ப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தும் மானிட மகனைப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டுமென்றால், அவரைப் போலவே ஒடுக்கப்பட்டவர்களுடனும் வலிமையிழந்தவர்களுடனும் தன்னை இணைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இயேசு தம்முடைய சீடர்களிடமிருந்து தியாகத்தை உள்ளடக்கிய தீவிர அர்ப்பணத்தைக் கோருகின்றார்.
