Universalistic Mission
Earlier, in Galilee, Jesus had sent out the twelve to heal and proclaim the kingdom (9,1-6). Now Jesus sends ahead of him seventy disciples in pairs to expand his mission. These seventy are called to perform the same mission as John the Baptist, i.e., preparing the people to welcome the Messiah. Jesus coming is identified with the arrival of the kingdom of God, and so they announce to the people, “The Kingdom of God has come near to you” (10,9). The mission of the twelve was to the lost sheep of Israel that consists of the twelve tribes of chosen people. The sending of the seventy is to the Gentile villages in Galilee and Samaria. This mission was carried out only after resurrection of Christ. The number seventy is symbolic. Seventy was the number of the nations of the world according to the biblical tradition. According to Ex 1,5 seventy was the number of the people of Israel who had gone down to Egypt. Deut 32,8 says that God fixed boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel. Hence number seventy represents the whole world and has some connection with the people of Israel. It symbolizes the universal character of the Gospel which is meant for all the peoples of the earth.
முன்னதாக, கலிலேயாவில் குணப்படுத்தவும் இறையாட்சியை அறிவிக்கவும் இயேசு பன்னிருவரை அனுப்பியிருந்தார் (9,1-6). இப்போது தனது பணியை விரிவுபடுத்த எழுபது சீடர்களை இருவர் இருவராக அனுப்புகின்றார். இந்த எழுபது பேரும் திருமுழுக்கு யோவான் செய்த அதே பணியைச் செய்ய அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். அதாவது மெசியாவை வரவேற்க மக்களை தயார்படுத்துவது. இயேசுவின் வருகை இறையாட்சியினுடைய வருகையின் அடையாளமாக காணப்படுகிறது. எனவே, சீடர்கள் மக்களிடம் “இறையாட்சி அவர்களை நெருங்கி வந்துவிட்டது” (10,9) என்று அறிவிக்கிறார்கள். முன்னர் அனுப்பப்பட்ட பன்னிருவரின் பணி, இஸ்ரயேலில் காணாமல் போன ஆடுகளுக்காக மட்டுமே; இவர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட மக்களின் பன்னிரண்டு குலங்களுக்குள் அடங்குவர். பிறஇனத்தவரான கலிலேயா மற்றும் சமாரியாவிலுள்ள கிராமங்களுக்கு இந்த எழுபது பேரை அனுப்புகின்றார். இப்பணி கிறிஸ்துவின் உயிர்த்தெழுதலுக்குப் பிறகு தான் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டது. எழுபது என்பது குறியீடாகும். விவிலிய மரபுப் படி உலக நாடுகளின் எண்ணிக்கையை எழுபது குறிக்கின்றது. விப 1,5ல் எகிப்துக்குச் சென்ற யாக்கோபினுடைய மக்களின் எண்ணிக்கை எழுபதாகும். இணை 32,8 “இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களின் எண்ணிக்கைக்கு ஏற்ப மக்கள் இனங்களின் எல்லைகளை” நிர்ணயித்ததாகக் கூறுகிறது. எனவே எண் எழுபது முழுஉலகையும் குறிக்கின்றது மற்றும் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களுடன் சில தொடர்புகளை கொண்டுள்ளது. இது பூவுலகில் வாழும் அனைத்து மக்களுக்கும் பொருந்தக்கூடிய நற்செய்தியின் உலகளாவிய தன்மையைக் குறிக்கிறது.
