08.08.2016 TEMPLE TAX

Posted under Reflections on August 8th, 2016 by

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 17:22-27

Jesus was asked to pay the temple tax. Every Jew, from all over the world, was supposed to pay the temple tax (one day’s wage) to help to support the temple in Jerusalem. This was an irritant for every Jew. Jesus himself has expressed it in a little way.

Then how did Jesus, who chased out the money changers and those who sold things in the temple area, asked Peter to pay the temple tax? Jesus waited for an opportune time. He was a master strategist. He was himself, as he told his disciples to be, as wise as the serpent (Mt 10:16).

07.08.2016 KINGDOM

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 12:32-48

The followers are assured of the gift. They are going to receive the kingdom. The evil is overcome. The battle is won. However there is no time to sit and relax. The followers must be ready to enter the kingdom. The expectation of the moment is like the return of the master. It could be any moment: second watch (9pm to 12 midnight); third watch (12 midnight to 3 am).

Being vigilant is the only thing the followers will have to be practicing (all the rest they are okay). Peter’s question poses a nice point and the answer of Jesus seems to be a yes. This passage speaks of a responsibility. This responsibility is for the leaders, pastors, and teachers. When the master comes will he find them busy at their work or talking their ease and abusing the house hold?
