Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 5:33-39

Fasting is one of the important religious practices of the Jewish religion as it is of any religion. Every pious group also practiced this and expected the followers to do the same. People thought that Jesus was forming a pious group (religious group) because he had followers. But the followers of Jesus did not fast and did not offer prayers. Luke says that the disciples of John fast often and offer prayers … but yours eat and drink.

The followers of Jesus lived a different life style that distinguished them from the other groups. Any religious group or pious group or prayer group had certain common features. Jesus group was different from the rest. Jesus gave two reasons for the behaviour of his followers: one was that they had the bridegroom with them; and second reason was that his group was totally different from the old forms and hence there were different from the rest.

இயேசுவையும் அவருடைய சீடர்களையும் புதிய குழுவாக (ஜெபக்குழு> பக்தி குழு) கருதினார்கள். எல்லாக் குழுக்களுமே நோன்பிருத்தல்> ஜெபித்தல் போன்ற பக்தி முயற்சிகளில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தனர். (யோவானுடைய சீடர்கள் அடிக்கடி நோன்பிருந்து மன்றாடி வருகிறார்கள்@ பரிசேயர்களின் சீடரும் அவ்வாறே செய்கின்றனர்). மாறாக> இயேசுவின் சீடர்கள் உண்பதும் குடிப்பதுமாக இருக்கின்றனர். இதற்கு இயேசு இரண்டு காரணங்கள் கொடுக்கினறார்: ஒன்று> மணமகன் மணவிருந்தினர்களோடு இருக்கிறார்@ இரண்டு> இது ஒரு புதுவிதமான குழு. பழையவைகளோடு ஒன்றுபடாது.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 5:1-11

Peter was a fisherman. He worked in collaboration with James and John who were fishermen themselves. They were partners. Fishermen work in collaboration with the others. They needed the support and help of others. Peter was a recognized fisherman. Jesus was not a fisherman but he commanded Peter to throw the net into the sea. However Peter accepted his suggestion and obeyed him. Peter was ready to accept suggestions from a person who was not a fisherman.

Jesus preached the word of God from the boat. Jesus was doing it in the synagogue. And that was the right place to do it. Now he was doing it from the boat. Jesus made every place a place for the proclamation of the word of God. (a boat became the pulpit for Jesus). Usually the word of god was addressed to the people who were willing to listen to it and that was also done in the synagogue. Here Jesus addressed the people who were busy with their work (Peter and others washing their nets). Proclamation is done irrespective of the listeners.

பேதுரு ஒரு மீனவர். அவரும் மற்ற மீனவரோடு இனைந்து பணிசெய்கிறார். இயேசு மீனவர் அல்ல. ஆனால் மீனவருக்கு வழிகாட்டுகிறார். இறைவார்த்தையை படகிலிருந்து போதிக்கிறார். படகு அவருக்கு ஜெபகூடமாகிறது. பணிசெய்து கொண்டிருப்பவர்கள் கூட அவருடைய போதனைக்கு உட்பட்டவர்கள். அவர்கள் பணிசெய்து கொண்டிருப்பதை இயேசு தடுக்கவில்லை. இயேசு அவருடைய போதனை பணியை செய்கிறார்.
