Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 1:26-38

What sort of greeting this might be was going on in the mind of Mary. Greeting is supposed to be pleasant and encouraging. Since this greeting was from heaven Mary was not sure of what was it. The content of the greeting was not clear but the message after the greeting was disturbing.

Greeting was pleasant (the Lord is with you). But the message, though from God, was not clear and it raised questions in her mind. She was caught up with a situation which made her think otherwise. She believed in God who was all powerful and all possible. Yet she needed assurance. When assurance was given she submitted herself to the will of God.

இறைவன் எல்லாம் வல்லவர் என்று நம்பியிருந்தாள் மரியா. ஆனால் அவளுக்கு கூறப்பட்ட செய்தி அவளை கலங்க வைத்தது. மரியாவுக்கு உறுதிப்படுத்தும் ஆறதல் கொடுக்கும் செய்தி தேவைப்பட்டது. உறுதிப்படுத்தும் செய்தி கிடைத்தவுடன் இறைதிட்டத்திற்கு உடன் படுகிறாள்.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 1:5-25

The story of Zechariah and Elizabeth has its similar stories in the Old Testament. Abraham and Sarah had their son in their old age. Rachel bore sons to Jacob after many years of childlessness. So also are the stories of the births of Samson and Samuel. All these stories have God’s purposes and so also the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth.

In the culture of Israel, childlessness was mocked. It was considered to be a disgrace not to have a child. Situation of disgrace is removed by the intervention of God. God intervenes at a time when he finds it fit to remove the disgrace. It is to show that God has acted in this situation because humanly it is impossible.

இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடையே கருவுற இயலாதவராத நிலை ஒரு இகழ்ச்சியாக கருதப்பட்டது. கருவுற இயலாதவரை அவமதித்தார்கள். இதுபோன்ற இகழ்ச்சியை கடவுள் ஒருவர்தான் அகற்ற முடியும். பழைய ஏற்பாட்டில் கடவுள் இதுபோன்ற சூழ்நிலைகளில் அருள்வரம் கொடுத்து மாற்றியிருக்கிறார். அது கடவுளின் செயல். தகுந்த நேரத்தில் கடவுள் செய்வார்.
