GOSPEL READING: LUKE 13:1-9

By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!

We cannot judge of men’s sins by their sufferings in this world. Jesus cautioned his hearers not to make an ill use of sad events. Natural events (like a building falling on people) or planned action of someone (Pilate) should in no way be linked with the moral life of the sufferer. For many are thrown into the furnace as gold to be purified, not as dross and chaff to be consumed. We must therefore not be harsh in our judgments of those that are afflicted more than their neighbours. Judge not, that you may be not judged Mt. 7:1.

All these stories are a call to repentance. This is a reminder that all of us deserve to perish like those in the stories. We are all sinners and we are as great sinners as those who suffer. We should only repent. The sufferings of the others or the judgment of God on others is only a call to repent. Repentance is the only way to escape perishing.

பிறர் குற்றவாளிகள் எனத் தீர்ப்பு அளிக்காதீர்கள் (மத் 7:1). பிறர்படும் துன்பங்களை வைத்து அவர்களை குற்றவாளிகள் என தீர்ப்பு அளிக்கக்கூடாது. பிறர்படும் துன்பங்கள் நம்மை மனம் மாற அழைக்கிறது. நாம் அனைவரும் துன்ப்பப்படுவோம். துன்பம் எல்லாருக்கும் பொதுவானது. நாம் அனைவரும் பாவிகள் என்பதும் உண்மையே. மனம் மாறினால்த்தான் அழிவிலிருந்து தப்பிக்க முடியும்.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 15:1-3, 11-32

So to them he addressed this parable.

This parable is an answer to the Pharisees. They questioned him regarding his link with the tax collectors and sinners. Tax collectors were socially wrong (they collected tax for the Romans and indirectly they welcomed Roman rule which again indirectly denied the rule of God). Sinners were morally wrong (they did not practice the religion particularly they did not practice the Mosaic religion and the traditions that followed).

The parable which Jesus was addressing them with was to tell them that God was waiting for the return of the sinners. God wanted them to come back to him. He was waiting for them. But the leaders were not allowing them to return nor did they help in any way to help them to return. Instead they tried to prevent them from entering into religion.

பரிசேயருக்கும், மறைநூல் அறிஞருக்கும் இந்த உவமையைச் சொல்லுகிறார். அவர்களுடைய மனநிலை மன்னிப்பை வழங்காத மனநிலை. ஆனால் அவர்கள் வழிபடும் கடவுளின் மனநிலை வேறு. பாவிகள் மனம்திரும்பி வரவேண்டும் என்றும் அவர்களுக்காக காத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் மனநிலைதான் கடவுளின் மனநிலை.
