GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 5:1-12

This is the first time that Jesus is starting his teaching ministry in Matthew’s gospel. Till now it was his private life at home and then he was baptized, then again he was calling his disciples and doing healing ministry. Here now he has gathered enough followers and listeners and he begins his teaching.

It is not a theoretical teaching of some rules and rubrics rather it is about the people. It reflects the target group he is addressing and the target groups for whom he is going to work. The people are identified. These are the people of God: those who are poor in spirit, those who mourn the meek, the merciful etc.

31.10.2016 MEAL

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 14:12-14

The message of Jesus is quite strange and out of the ordinary. Meal is a time when friends and relatives come together to share and strengthen their relationship and friendship. Often meal is a sign for the others about the host’s popularity among the people of the locality. Invitations will further be strengthened by the invitation of the other.

Jesus says that invitations should be repaid by the invitees. Meals should be with the poor and the orphans and the sick so that the reward is that the poor are only helped. Certainly this is not the way the secular world will do. Jesus is presenting the kingdom where the earthly rewards are not important.
