Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 6:60-69

You have the words of eternal life.

There were many who listened to Jesus. Among the listeners there were also people who just listened to his word and understood those words as mere words. They accepted that those words had only the material meaning. For them the words just explained the realities of the world as they were. Because of this many left him from following.

There were also disciples who accepted and believed that the words of Jesus had meaning beyond human understanding. They accepted the words of Jesus as divine word and the words had eternal significance. Disciples like Peter only could say that Jesus had the words of eternal life. And they could not but cling on to it.

நிலைவாழ்வு அளிக்கும் வார்த்தைகள் உம்மிடம்தானே உள்ளன.

இயேசுவின் வார்த்தையை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் விதத்தில்தான் ஒருவரின் சீடத்துவம் இருக்கிறது. இயேசுவின் வார்த்தையை சாதாரண வார்த்தையாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறவன் அவரோடு இருக்கமாட்டான். அவரைவிட்டு போய்விடுவான். ஆனால் இயேசுவின் வார்த்தையை இறைவார்த்தையாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்பவன் நிலைவாழ்வை பெறுகிறான்.

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 6:52-59

Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.

Jesus, in this passage, is discussing with them on the theme of life. The discussion is to communicate life to the people. Life can be communicated by anyone who has life. Jesus has life. He has it because he is with the Father and he is from the Father. He communicates this life which he has through his own life (the flesh and blood).

The rewards of receiving the life from Jesus are many: eternal life, resurrection, life, association with Jesus (remain in me). In fact this is the sum total of the expectation of any creature who believes in God. Any believer in God wants to belong to God and possess those basic gifts of God. All those gifts are found in Jesus because Jesus himself is a gift to the world.

‘உறுதியாக உங்களுக்குச் சொல்கிறேன்: மானிட மகனுடைய சதையை உண்டு அவருடைய இரத்தத்தைக் குடித்தாலொழிய நீங்கள் வாழ்வு அடையமாட்டீர்கள்.

வாழ்வைப்பற்றி பேசுகிறார் இயேசு. வாழ்வாக இருந்தாலும், நிலைவாழ்வாக இருந்தாலும், உயிர்ப்பாக இருந்தாலும் இவை அனைத்துமை இறைவனின் கொடை. இந்த கொடைகள் எல்லாமே இயேசுவின் வழியாகத்தான் கிடைக்கிறது. இதற்கு இயேசு தனது வாழ்வையே (உடலையும், இரத்தத்தையும்) கொடையாக கொடுக்கிறார்.
