Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 7:1-10

“I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”

The description of the centurion is quite interesting. A centurion is a Roman officer and the Romans were in Galilee to take possession of the land and occupy the land. They were ready to destroy anything but to subjugate them. But this centurion was the one who loved the country and the people and built a synagogue for the people. This centurion recognized the people as a nation and also recognized their religion. He considered Jesus to be better than himself. He recognized the other; recognized the society; and recognized the religion.

Jesus acknowledged all these of the centurion. Jesus summed up all these as expression of faith. Faith is accepting and acknowledging the other with all his qualities recognizing the society of the others as well (not only his own society or community) and respecting the religion of the other and assisting the religion of the other to function.

நூற்றுவர் தலைவர் ஒரு ரோமை அதிகாரி. (நான் அதிகாரத்துக்கு உட்பட்டவன். என் அதிகாரத்துக்கு உட்பட்ட படை வீரரும் உள்ளனர்). இந்த மனநிலையில் உள்ள ஒருவனுடைய குணநலன்கள் இங்கு மாறுபட்டு காணப்படுக்ன்றன. மற்றவரை உயர்வாக கருதுகிறான்@ பிறநாட்டை ஏற்றுக்கொள்கிறான்@ மற்றொருவருடைய மதத்தை மதிக்கிறான். இதுதான் உண்மை நம்பிக்கையின் வெளிப்பாடு.

GOSPEL READING: MARK 8:27-35

You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.

Peter was oscillating between the divine revelation and human thinking. Peter was receiving divine revelation. Jesus was the messiah was not acquired by human thinking. Human thinking could take people to consider Jesus as a prophet. It could not go beyond that. But Jesus was the messiah was given by God. (It was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven).

Peter was trying to mix divine revelation with human thinking. Peter wanted a messiah according to his human thinking. But Jesus was presenting a messiah according to the plan of God. Jesus was presenting a suffering messiah. Peter could not see the sense of this. His human thinking found this as a contradiction. Peter who was open to divine revelation should have been also open to the divine revelation in Jesus.

பேதுருவுக்கு இறைவெளிப்பாடு கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. இறைவெளிப்பாட்டை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும்போது அவர் வாழ்த்தப்படுகிறார். ஆனால் அவர் மனித சிந்தனைகளுக்கும் அடிமையாய் இருக்கிறார். மனித சிந்தனைகளைக்கொண்டு இறைவெளிபாட்டை வாழ முயற்சிக்கும்போது தவறுகிறார் பேதுரு. இறைவெளிபாடு மனித சிந்தனைக்கு உட்படாது. கிறிஸ்துவே நிறைவான இறைவெளிபாடு.
