GOSPEL READING: LUKE 6:27-38

But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Jesus proposes a practical way of life to those who listen to him. All his proposals are addressed to each one of the listeners as individuals. This is not for a group of people (these are not group norms). Also these are norms to address a negative or an opposing situation. And these are not rules to be lived among relatives and friends.

Loving, doing good, blessing and praying are done for our friends and relatives. They are our immediate care and concern. Usually enemies are disliked, hated, cursed and mistreated. Jesus proposes just the opposite of what we do normally. Here, does he want us to treat our enemies also as our relatives and friends or does he want us to be only loving, doing good, blessing and praying? Loving, doing good, blessing and praying irrespective of persons are Godly behaviours.

தனிமனித வாழ்க்கைக்கு தேவையான அடிப்படையான பண்புகளை இயேசு தன் சீடர்களுக்குச் சொல்லுகிறார். வழக்கமாக நாம் உறவினர்களிடமும், நண்பர்களிடமும் காட்டுகின்ற பண்புகள்: அன்பு கூருதல், நன்மை செய்தல், ஆசி கூறுதல், இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுதல். இதே பண்புகளை பகைவர்களிடமும், வெறுப்போர்களிடமும், சபிப்போர்களிடமும், இகழ்ந்து பேசுவோரிடமும் வாழ்ந்து காட்டச் சொல்லுகிறார் இயேசு. மேற்கூறிய நற்பண்புகளை (ஆள்பார்த்து வாழாமல்) எல்லாரிடமும் வாழ்ந்து காட்டுதல்தான் இறைவாழ்வு.

Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.

Jesus had just chosen twelve apostles from among the crowds of people and disciples. The twelve were to represent the twelve tribes of Israel (to give an image of the totality of the chosen people). The twelve tribes – the people of Israel – were special people because through them he could fulfil his purpose for the whole world. God chose the people of Israel and made covenant with them. In the book of Deuteronomy, as part of the covenant, we find blessings for those who obeyed and ‘curses’ for those who did not.

Similarly here, in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus had chosen the new Israel. He gave his vision of the work of God among this new Israel. There are four promises and four warnings in this vision of God’s work. In this God is doing something different and new. The poor, the hungry, those who weep and those who are hated are blessed. It is not that being hungry or poor is anything virtuous but the injustice that reigned in the world is removed. Among the new Israel God’s justice reigns.

இயேசு தம் சீடர்களைத் தம்மிடம் கூப்பிட்டு அவர்களுள் பன்னிருவரைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து அவர்களுக்குத் திருத்தூதர் என்று பெயரிடும்போது ஒரு புதிய இஸ்ராயேலை அவர் உருவாக்கினார். புதிய இஸ்ராயேல் மக்களுக்காக அவர் கொண்டுள்ள திட்டத்தை இங்கு முன்வைக்கிறார். அதாவது ஏழைகள், பட்டினியாய் இருப்போர், அழுது கொண்டிருப்போர் போன்றவர்கள் பேறுபெற்றோர்; ஏனெனில் இறையாட்சி (இறைவனின் நீதி) அங்கு ஆட்சி செய்யும். அது உலகை மாற்றி அமைக்கும். (உலகை சரிநேராக்கும்).
