GOSPEL READING: LUKE 17:7-10

‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’

Servants are there to do their work. As long as there is work they have to continue to do so. Workers cannot expect to be rewarded with because they have completed a particular job. Only when all the work is completed the worker may think of his own cares and concern.

This attitude seems to be a very difficult one to follow. But this is what happens in the society. Here the workers are given to follow the normal run of the day. They have their obligation and they have to keep doing it until the work is completed. Duty should not be mixed with business. In business one may look for profits and gains but in duty it is not so. Duty is an obligation to be completed.

‘நாங்கள் பயனற்ற பணியாளர்கள்; எங்கள் கடமையைத் தான் செய்தோம்’ எனச் சொல்லுங்கள்.

பணியாளர்கள் கடமையைச் செய்ய அழைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்கள். கடமையை முடிப்பதுதான் அவர்களுக்கு நிறைவு. பணிசெய்வதனால் அவர்கள் பலன்களை எதிர்பார்க்கக்கூடாது. கடமை வேறு தொழில் வேறு. கடமையைத் தொழிலாகக் கருதக்கூடாது.

And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry,’ you should forgive him.”

Sin is a reality. It is there in the world and it will be there (Things that cause sin will inevitably occur). But man should not be the cause for the inevitable to happen. Man should not induce the other to sin. Death rather than sin. Man should prefer to die than be the cause for sin.

Forgiveness should also happen. It should be a reality. Forgiveness should become part of the nature of man. One should be ready to forgive seven times which would imply continuously and constantly. Forgiveness should become a second nature to man. Only a man of faith will be able to forgive the same person doing the same mistake seven times a day.

ஒரே நாளில் அவர் ஏழு முறை உங்களுக்கு எதிராகப் பாவம் செய்து ஏழு முறையும் உங்களிடம் திரும்பி வந்து, ‘நான் மனம் மாறிவிட்டேன்’ என்று சொல்வாரானால் அவரை மன்னித்து விடுங்கள்”.

பாவம் மனித இயல்பில் கலந்துவிட்டது. ஏன் தவறுகிறான் என்று அவனுக்கே தெரியவில்லை (நான் விரும்பும் நன்மையைச் செய்வதில்லை; விரும்பாத தீமையையே செய்கிறேன் – உரோமையர் 7:19). பிறர் பாவத்தில் விழ மனிதன் காரணமாக இருக்கக்கூடாது. மன்னிப்பது மனித இயல்பாக இருக்க வேண்டும். மன்னித்துக்கொண்டே இருக்க வேண்டும்.
