Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 4:16-30

“Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Jesus went about doing things as any ordinary Jew of his time would do. He had been going to the synagogue on the Sabbath as his custom was. He had been praying listening and reading the scriptures as any ordinary Jew would do. He had been a very faithful Jew.

But at a particular time in his life he realized that the scriptures that he was reading were fulfilled in his life. This was in fact what the early church was trying to do. All what the Old Testament promised was fulfilled in him. This realization was felt by Jesus himself. Fulfilling of the Scriptures in his life was the sign of being Christ for Jesus and it should be so for the Christians.

மறைநூல் வாக்கு (பழைய ஏற்பாடு) இயேசுவில் முழுமையாக நிறைவேறியது என்பது தொடக்கக்கால திருச்சபையின் அசையா நம்பிக்கை. இதை இயேசுவே இங்கு சொல்லிக்காட்டுகிறார். அதாவது அவருடைய வாழ்வில் இறை வாக்கு நிறைவேறியது. மறைநூல் வாக்கு தன் வாழ்வில் நிறைவேறியதுதான் அவர் கிறிஸ்து (அவர் எனக்கு அருள்பொழிவு செய்துள்ளார்) என்பதற்கு இங்கு அடையாளமாக இருக்கிறது. கிறிஸ்துவை பின்பற்றும் சீடர்களுக்கும் அப்படித்தானே.

GOSPEL READING: MARK 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts. ‘You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”

Pharisees were very particular and meticulous about the observance of the traditions. These traditions were human traditions but there were made in order that they might reflect the divine. (for you are a people sacred to the LORD, your God -Deut 14:21). To be pure, holy, sacred and clean is the demand of God. This demand was interpreted into human rules. As days went by people believed and practiced the human rules and neglected to understand the mind of God.

Whenever Jesus was challenged by questions of any type or on any topic, he always and without fail, answered them from scriptures or with the intention of God. Any amount of pious practices and strict observances of rules without touching the heart of the individual and without regard for God’s commandment is lip-service and vain worship.

இம்மக்கள் உதட்டினால் என்னைப் போற்றுகின்றனர்@ இவர்கள் உள்ளமோ என்னை விட்டு வெகு தொலையில் இருக்கிறது. மனிதக் கட்டளைகளைக் கோட்பாடுகளாகக் கற்பிக்கின்றனர். இவர்கள் என்னை வழிபடுவது வீண் என்று அவர் எழுதியுள்ளார்.

பரிசேயர்கள் தம் மூதாதையர் (மனித) மரபை மிக கவனமாகவும் கண்டிப்பாகவும் கடைபிடித்து வந்தார்கள். இறைவன் தூயவராய் இருப்பதுபோல் மக்களும் தூயவராய் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்பதே நோக்கம் (இச 14:21). ஆனால் விளக்கங்களும் ஒழுங்குகளும் மனித நிலையை வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன@ இறைசித்தத்தை மறந்தன. ஒழுங்குகளும் மரபுகளும் தனிமனித உள்ளத்தை தொடாமலும், இறைசித்தத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தாமலும் இருந்தால்; அவை வீண் வழிபாடும் உதட்டினால் போற்றுதலுமே.
