Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 3:13-17

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

Today’s reading speaks about God, heaven, Son of Man, Son of God and Moses. Except Moses all the other titles are Divine related titles. Here divine plan is explained. God has great love for the world and this love has only one goal and that is to grant eternal life to the believers. And this love is a sacrificial love: a love that is ready even to sacrifice his only son. God’s love is totally other oriented and sacrificial. It is not a negative form of love (condemn).

Moses gives a model to the execution of this love. People were dying in the desert and God commissioned Moses to lift up a serpent on a piece of wood and anyone who looked up to the lifted up was saved. Similarly anyone who looked up to Jesus who would be lifted up (his death on the cross) would be saved. Belief in Jesus and belief in Jesus who was crucified is essential for the salvation.

தம் ஒரே மகன் மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளும் எவரும் அழியாமல் நிலைவாழ்வு பெறும் பொருட்டு அந்த மகனையே அளிக்கும் அளவுக்குக் கடவுள் உலகின்மேல் அன்பு கூர்ந்தார்.

இறைதிட்டம் மக்கள் மீட்புப் பெற வேண்டும் என்பதே. இந்த தட்டத்தை நிறைவேற்ற இறைவன் தன் ஒரேபேறான மகனை இழக்கவும் அதுவும் இழிநிலையில் இழக்கவும் தயங்கவில்லை. மக்களின் மீட்பு மகனின் வாழ்வைவிட முக்கியமானது. அந்த மகனில் நம்பிக்கை வைப்பதும் அவரை உற்றுநோக்குவதும் தலையானது.

GOSPEL READING: LUKE 6:27-38

But to you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Jesus proposes a practical way of life to those who listen to him. All his proposals are addressed to each one of the listeners as individuals. This is not for a group of people (these are not group norms). Also these are norms to address a negative or an opposing situation. And these are not rules to be lived among relatives and friends.

Loving, doing good, blessing and praying are done for our friends and relatives. They are our immediate care and concern. Usually enemies are disliked, hated, cursed and mistreated. Jesus proposes just the opposite of what we do normally. Here, does he want us to treat our enemies also as our relatives and friends or does he want us to be only loving, doing good, blessing and praying? Loving, doing good, blessing and praying irrespective of persons are Godly behaviours.

தனிமனித வாழ்க்கைக்கு தேவையான அடிப்படையான பண்புகளை இயேசு தன் சீடர்களுக்குச் சொல்லுகிறார். வழக்கமாக நாம் உறவினர்களிடமும், நண்பர்களிடமும் காட்டுகின்ற பண்புகள்: அன்பு கூருதல், நன்மை செய்தல், ஆசி கூறுதல், இறைவனிடம் வேண்டுதல். இதே பண்புகளை பகைவர்களிடமும், வெறுப்போர்களிடமும், சபிப்போர்களிடமும், இகழ்ந்து பேசுவோரிடமும் வாழ்ந்து காட்டச் சொல்லுகிறார் இயேசு. மேற்கூறிய நற்பண்புகளை (ஆள்பார்த்து வாழாமல்) எல்லாரிடமும் வாழ்ந்து காட்டுதல்தான் இறைவாழ்வு.
