Breaking the Word

GOSPEL READING: MATTHEW 23:13-22

You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.

Scribes were the people who studied the Torah and gave explanations to everything that were found in it. They were so much in touch with the word of God. Day in day out they were there with the word of God and explained them to the people. They were in constant touch with the word of God. They were thought to be the persons who led the ordinary people to God.

Pharisees were the persons who practiced many pious activities and kept themselves pure and clean and thus they were the constant reminders of God to the people. Their dress and their movements and their practices were constant reminders that they were God centered people. But both Scribes and Pharisees led the people away from God because they were not presenting God to the people rather they presented themselves.

மக்கள் நுழையாதவாறு அவர்கள் முன்பாக விண்ணக வாயிலை அடைத்துவிடுகிறீர்கள்; நீங்கள் நுழைவதில்லை, நுழைவோரையும் விடுவதில்லை.

மறைநூல் அறிஞரும், பரிசேயரும் கடவுளை மக்களுக்கு வெளிப்படுத்துபவர்களாக இருந்திருக்கவேண்டும். ஆனால் அவர்கள் கடவுளை மறந்து தங்களையே வெளிப்படுத்தினார்கள். மக்கள் கடவுளை சென்றடைவதை அவர்கள் தடுத்தார்கள். தங்களை முன்வைத்து கடவுளை மறைத்தார்கள், மறக்கடித்தார்கள். ஆகவேதான் இயேசு அவர்களை வெளிவேடக்காரர்கள் என்று அழைத்தார். ‘வெளிவேடக்கார மறைநூல் அறிஞரே, பரிசேயரே, ஐயோ! உங்களுக்குக் கேடு!

GOSPEL READING: JOHN 6:60-69

Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Discipleship is a gift of God. (“For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.”). Human efforts and human desires will never make one a disciple. Human efforts will make one to understand things in a human way only. This will lead to murmuring, leaving Jesus and going back to old ways and even betrayal.

But a man who has been chosen by God and has received revelation from God (it is not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven) will cling to Jesus and to his words (Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life). These disciples will believe and be convinced and proclaim that Jesus is the Holy One of God.

ஆண்டவரே நாங்கள் யாரிடம் போவோம்? நிலைவாழ்வு அளிக்கும் வார்த்தைகள் உம்மிடம்தானே உள்ளன.

உண்மை சீடர்கள் கடவுளால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். தந்தையாகிய கடவுளால் இயேசுவுக்கு கொடையாக கொடுக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். மனித இயல்பினால், விருப்பத்தினால் ஒருவன் சீடனாக முடியாது. அப்படியே விரும்பி வந்தாலும் அவர்கள் முணுமுணுப்பர்; அவரை விட்டு விலகிப் போவர்; காட்டிக்கொடுப்பர். கடவுளால் அனுப்பப்பட்டவர்கள் இயேசுவை நம்புவர்; அவரை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளுவர்; அவரை உலகறியச் செய்வர்.
